Printing from your Peko Pal
Your child can ask Peko to print what they made: a picture, a story, a list. They say something like "print my story" or "print my picture on 4x6 paper", and it comes out of your printer at home.
What you need
- A printer that connects to WiFi. Most printers made in the last several years work, including ones that say AirPrint on the box.
- The printer turned on and on the same WiFi network as the Peko Pal.
- To print by asking Peko: Open Apps & Settings turned on for your child in the Peko Pal app. The Printables app doesn't need it. There is nothing to install and no printer to set up.
Printing with the buttons
The Printables app lets your child print without asking Peko: they press up and down to hear each page's name and the action button to print it. It lists the printables you added and what your child made with Peko, and it works with Peko AI turned off.
Printing by asking Peko
- Your child makes something with Peko, or asks about one they already made.
- They ask Peko to print it, and Peko prints it straight away.
- The Pal finds the printer on your WiFi by itself and prints. Peko tells your child when it has been sent.
Things with a layout, like a list, itinerary, chart or invitation, print as a colorful page made for your child's conversation level. Long text, like a whole story, or anything your child asks to have as plain text, prints as plain text.
If there is more than one printer at home, the Pal uses the one it last printed to, or the first one it finds. Your child can pick another by name: "print it on the Canon", and the Pal remembers that printer, for Peko and for the Printables app.
Paper size
Peko prints on your printer's usual paper, normally US letter. Your child can ask for another size by name: letter, A4, legal, 4x6, 5x7 or 8x10. If your printer doesn't have that paper, Peko prints on what it has and tells your child so.
If nothing prints
- Check that the printer is on and connected to the same WiFi as the Peko Pal. A printer that has gone to sleep or lost its WiFi is the most common reason.
- Check that it has paper and ink. When the printer reports that it is out of paper, the Pal says so: "The printer is out of paper. Ask a grown-up to put some paper in." A page the printer already took prints by itself once you add paper, so there is no need to print it again.
- Try again. If it can't print, the Pal says what went wrong in plain words, like "I can't find a printer" or "It may need paper or ink". When printing by asking Peko, Peko says it in its own words. The full list of what the Printables app says, and when, is in Printables.
- When asking Peko, check that Open Apps & Settings is on for your child.
Good to know
- The Peko Pal sends the page straight to your printer over your home WiFi. To lay out a story or list, the words are sent to Peko's service to be turned into a page. They are not kept afterward.
- Some printers can print only the first page of a long story. Most print every page.
- Printers that only understand their own maker's special format, and old printers without WiFi, are not supported.
