# Privacy policy

Effective October 13, 2026

Peko Pal is a screen-free device for kids, set up and managed by a parent in the Peko Pal app. This policy explains what we collect, why, who helps us process it, how long we keep it, and how you delete it.

## Who we are

Peko Pal ("we", "us") is based in Berkeley, California. This policy covers the Peko Pal device (a "Pal"), the Peko Pal app for iPhone, and this website, www.pekopal.com.

Email us at the address on https://www.pekopal.com/support with questions about this policy.

## The short version

- A parent creates the account and every child profile, after reading a notice about what we collect and agreeing to it. Children can't sign up.
- We collect what Peko Pal needs to work: your account details, your children's profiles, the messages they send to friends, written transcripts of their conversations with Peko, and information about the Pal itself.
- When your child talks with Peko, their voice is streamed live to OpenAI so Peko can answer. We don't save the audio. OpenAI may keep it for up to 30 days to check for misuse, then deletes it.
- We don't sell your information, we don't show ads, and we don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
- We don't use your family's information to train AI models.
- You can delete a child's profile, or your whole account, from the Peko Pal app at any time.

## What we collect from parents

- **Your account.** You sign in with Apple. We receive your name and email address from Apple (this can be Apple's private relay address if you choose to hide yours) and a user ID for your account.
- **Your family.** The family you belong to, the other adults you share it with, and the Pals you have set up.
- **Your consent.** When you agreed to our notice to parents, and which version of this policy it was.
- **Messages you send.** Voice and text messages you send from the app to your children's friends.
- **Phone contacts.** The names and phone numbers you add so your child can call those people from their Pal.
- **Notifications.** A push-notification token for your phone, so we can tell you about new messages and, if you turn it on, send occasional notes about new apps, stories and features.
- **Support emails.** What you tell us when you write to us.

## What we collect about children

A parent gives us this information, or it is created when a child uses their Pal or the Peko Pal app:

- **Profile.** Your child's first name (or a nickname), the conversation level you choose for them, and, if you add them, notes for Peko about your child. If you or your child tells Peko where they are, for the weather, we keep that place.
- **Settings and friends.** The apps on their Pal, your limits and AI settings, and their friends.
- **Messages.** Voice and text messages your child sends to friends, and the messages friends send them.
- **Conversations with Peko.** When your child uses an AI app, we keep a written transcript of what your child and Peko said, and a short summary of each conversation. We make the summary even when **Remember Conversations** is off; that setting only stops Peko from using past conversations.
- **Lessons.** What your child answered in lessons, how they did, and a summary of each lesson.
- **Things your child makes with Peko,** such as books and the pictures Peko draws for them. We don't collect photos or videos.
- **Activity.** Which apps and stories your child used and when, their listening history, and whether they are online.
- **Name clips.** Short recordings of Peko saying your child's and their friends' names, such as "New message from Sam". These are saved as files at unlisted web addresses so the Pal can play them.

Calls and Walkie-Talkie are not recorded or transcribed. Recordings made with the Recorder app stay on the Pal.

## What we collect from the Pal

- **Device identifiers.** The Pal's serial number and network (MAC) address, and its firmware version.
- **Status and diagnostics.** Battery level, the name and signal strength of the Wi-Fi network it uses, time zone and technical logs, so the Pal works and we can fix problems.

## What we collect on this website

- **The waitlist.** If you join the waitlist, we keep your email address, your name if you give it, which page sent you, the Google Ads click ID if you came from a Google ad, and when you signed up.
- **Spam protection.** The waitlist form uses Google reCAPTCHA to check that a person, not a bot, is signing up. Google's [privacy policy](https://policies.google.com/privacy) applies to it.
- **Fonts.** Pages load fonts from Google Fonts, so Google receives your IP address when you visit.
- **Server logs.** Our servers log requests, including IP addresses, to keep the site running and stop abuse.

This website has no advertising and no analytics trackers.

## How we use it

- To run Peko Pal: deliver messages to the right Pal and app, let Peko answer your child, play stories and music, and keep each Pal's settings up to date.
- To show you what your child is doing: chats, conversation transcripts, activity and lesson progress in the Peko Pal app.
- To let Peko remember recent conversations, if you leave **Remember Conversations** on.
- To keep children safe: automated safety checks on what Peko says and on what children ask it to search for or make, and reviewing reports parents send us.
- To understand how Peko Pal is used, fix problems and improve it.
- To contact you about your account, and, if you turn them on, to send you notifications.

We don't use your family's information to train AI models.

## Children's privacy

Peko Pal is made for children ages 3 to 12, and we follow the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

- **A parent gives consent.** Only an adult can create a Peko Pal account. Before you add a child, the app shows you a notice of what we collect from children and why, and asks you to confirm that you are the child's parent or legal guardian and that you agree. We record when you agreed and to which version of this policy.
- **What we collect about a child** is listed under [What we collect about children](#what-we-collect-about-children).
- **Friends.** A child can ask Peko to add a friend by name and start recording messages for them, but those messages reach no one until a parent sends that friend's family an invite from the app and they accept it.
- **Who sees it.** You and the other adults in your family. A message goes to the friend it was sent to and that friend's family. A friend's family can see whether your child is online, unless you turn that off. If you report a family to us, we see the message you reported.
- **Your controls.** You can read your child's conversations with Peko and their chats in the app, remove AI apps from their Pal, switch off Remember Conversations, and delete your child's profile at any time. To ask what we hold about your child, or to have it deleted, write to us at the address on https://www.pekopal.com/support.

## Who we share it with

We don't sell or rent personal information, and we don't share it for advertising. We share it only with:

- **Service providers who run Peko Pal for us.** They process it under their own terms for businesses:
  - **OpenAI:** the live voice conversation with Peko, turning speech into text, Peko's spoken voice (including the name clips), kid-safe web search, pictures your child makes, and automated safety checks. OpenAI receives your child's voice, their first name and age, and your notes for Peko. OpenAI doesn't use any of it to train its models, and may keep it for up to 30 days to check for misuse before deleting it.
  - **Google:** hosting, databases and file storage (Google Cloud and Firebase), sign-in, push notifications, maps and weather for a place you or your child set, and Gemini AI models, which summarize conversations, check lesson answers, and write and narrate books your child makes with Peko.
  - **Apple:** Sign in with Apple and push notifications to your iPhone.
  - **Slack and Google:** automated summaries of technical errors, which can include a Pal's network address, are sent to our team's Slack and summarized with Gemini.
- **Your child's friends and their families,** for the messages your child sends them.
- **The law.** When we must, to comply with the law, or to protect the safety of a child or anyone else.

## How long we keep it

- **Conversation transcripts and summaries** are deleted automatically 90 days after the conversation.
- **Device activity history** in the app is deleted automatically after 90 days.
- **Usage records** we use to understand how Peko Pal is used are deleted automatically after 13 months.
- **Technical logs** are deleted after 30 days.
- **Reports you send us about another family** are deleted automatically 12 months after you send them.
- **Your child's voice** isn't saved by us. OpenAI may keep what it receives for up to 30 days to check for misuse, then deletes it.
- **Messages, pictures, books, name clips, listening history and lesson progress** are kept until you delete them, delete your child's profile, or delete your account.
- **Your account and your children's profiles** are kept until you delete them.
- **Deleted files** can be recovered by us for 7 days, then they are gone.
- **Waitlist sign-ups** are kept until you ask us to remove yours.

## How to delete your information

- **Delete a child's profile.** In the Peko Pal app, open your child's settings and tap **Delete** with their name. This deletes their profile, friends, conversations with friends, pictures and books, and unpairs their Pal.
- **Delete your account.** In the Peko Pal app, open **Account** and tap **Delete Account**. If you are the only adult in your family, this deletes your family, your children's profiles, settings, friends, pictures and books, and releases your Pals so they can be set up again. If other adults share your family, only you are removed and your family's information stays with them. We also try to revoke Peko Pal's access to your Apple ID.
- **What deleting your account keeps.** A conversation with another family stays with that family, including the messages your child sent them. Reports you sent us, technical logs and usage records are kept for the times above.
- **Unpair a Pal.** A Pal erases its Wi-Fi networks, messages and downloads the next time it connects. See [Unpairing a Peko Pal](https://www.pekopal.com/guide/unpairing).
- **Or ask us.** Write to us at the address on https://www.pekopal.com/support and we'll delete it for you.

## Security

Information travels between the Pal, the app and our servers encrypted. Walkie-Talkie is the exception: it is a short-range radio between nearby Pals and is not encrypted. Access to your information is limited to the people and services that need it to run Peko Pal. No system is perfectly secure, so if you think something is wrong, tell us at the address on https://www.pekopal.com/support.

## Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change affects what we collect about children or how we use it, we'll ask parents to agree again in the app before it applies.
